The village Polomka is situated in the Horehronie region at the Low Tatras mountains. It is the biggest village in the Heľpa region at the river Hron. From the northern side it is protected by Homôľka and from the southern side by Fabova hoľa.
The village was founded by the end of the 15. century and belonged to Muránsky lordship. In the 16. century gold, silver and iron were mined here. After the local mining industry declined majority of the local population started to work as shepherds, woodcutters or sawmill workers. During the World War II. Polomka citizens actively participated in the resistance movement against fascism in the villages Červená Skala, Telgárt and Vernár. Characteristic local log houses and folk costumes with geometric embroideries were recorded in photos and movies of Karel Plicka.
A Roman-Catholic church from the middle of the 17. century contains interior of a baroque style. A chapel from the year 1823 is decorated by woodcarving ornaments.
Hikes to the peaks of the Low Tatras mountains during the summer and winter will satisfy even the most demanding tourists. In the southern part, they can visit Muránska Plateau (Muránska planina) with its unique caves and other karst formations.
The ski resort Bučník in Polomka offers facilities for winter sports on the slopes of the Slovenské Rudohorie mountains. Ski slopes are about 2000 m long and can satisfy skilled skiers as well as the beginners. From the top of the hill Bučník you can have a nice view at the valley of the river Hron and the southern slopes of the Low Tatras.
