Lopej is a local part of the town Podbrezová. It is situated on the spot where the Vajskovský Creek (Vajskovský potok) enters the river Hron. The settlement was founded in 1358 by Petrík, the mayor of the village Predajná, as a part of Ľupča lordship. Iron ore was mined here since the 16. century. The church of St. Juraj was originally built in the gothic style and rebuilt in the 18. century. People use to meet during the last weekend of April and symbolically “open” the entrance to the valleys of Slovenské Rudohorie and Low Tatras mountains.
Very close to this very romantic village, you can find excellent conditions for easy walks to the woods, picking mushrooms and wild fruits. There are many cycle routes and for more demanding visitors we recommend to hike to the Vajskovská Valley (Vajskovská dolina), to Ďumbier peak (2043 m) and Chopok peak (2024 m). You can swim in Podbrezová, Tále and in the water reservoir Krpáčovo, where you also can try boating and easy surfing. In the village Bystrá, which is very close, we recommend to see 600 m of stalactite and stalagmite tunnels of the Bystrianska Cave (Bystrianska jaskyňa), which were for the first time open to public in 1948. In the village Hronec you are see a unique attraction - original railroad and a train with a steam engine (Čiernohronská železnica) - that is still operational. In the village Lopej you can enjoy rafting on the river Hron.
In the winter, we recommend to ski on the slopes of Tále, Krpáčovo, Mýto pod Ďumbierom and the peak Chopok-Srdiečko, only about 15 minutes far by car from the village Lopej.

NOTE: This village administratively belongs to the town of Podbrezová.
